The Anaheim Ducks training camp opened on Friday September 18th at Anaheim Ice. The Ducks have scrimmages scheduled for the entire weekend and through Monday September 21st. Here are some thoughts and highlights from the first two days of camp.
Carl Hagelin has lived up to his expectations in terms of his speed. He flew around the rink both days. He was seen skating with Ryan Getzlaf and Chris Stewart, which still raises the question whether he will play on the first or second line. The added speed could really create more room for Getzlaf and Corey Perry if he is inserted on the top line.
Perry is back and ready to go. He and Ryan Kesler had a fencing session during the scrimmage in which Kesler slashed Perry around the ankles. Those two are eager to get back to the Stanley Cup journey.
Vitaly Vishnevski looked he was able to play well and tough on the ice. He is a long shot to make the team, but has definitely been training hard. He may not make the NHL club, but could possibly find himself in San Diego.
On day two a scrimmage took place with two 20 minute halves. The first half saw team white score twice getting goals from Brandon Montour and Corey Perry. One goal was scored by the black team from Kesler. According to the Ducks they started the second half from 0-0 instead of continuing the 2-1 score.
In the second half it was a goal fest as each team scored three times. The white team saw goals from Joseph Cramarossa, Max Friberg, and Sami Vatanen. The black team goals were by Sheldon Brookbank, Kesler, and Mike Santorelli. It was difficult to really keep a score because the teams broke out into 3-on-3 play in preparation for the new overtime rules this season.
Some interesting 3-on-3 line combinations featured were Perry, Vatanen, and Hampus Lindholm. Another line consisted of Cam Fowler, Jiri Sekac, and Nick Ritchie. Another interesting line combination was Kesler, Jakob Silfverberg, and Fowler.
