After the terrible start to the season by the Anaheim Ducks, GM Bob Murray issued a statement today.
“I really don’t like commenting on rumors, but I will say this, we were one game away from the (Stanley Cup) Final just five months ago,” Murray said. “So while this has been a terrible start, I’m not inclined to make rash changes. I’m going to be patient.
“That said, we are severely underperforming as a group. I can’t recall a time where a vast majority of our players have underachieved simultaneously, and I fully expect a turnaround.”
Several players and Bruce Boudreau commented on the current state of the Anaheim Ducks:
“This is a challenge. It’s adversity. When we come through it on the other end, we’ll be better as a team.”
“I have full confidence in the people inside this room and the guys behind the bench. The answers are in here.”
“Bruce is the most genuine and caring guy I’ve ever played for. You want to win for a guy like that. We need to rally around him.”
“It’s hard to explain,” Ducks captain Ryan Getzlaf said. “It’s a combination of everything, I guess. If it was one thing I’d have narrowed it down already and would have fixed it. It’s a matter of things going in the right direction, putting some pucks in the net.”
“Bruce has obviously taken the heat, like every coach in those situations usually does. I don’t think it’s necessary. Bruce doesn’t play the game. … We’ve been shut out in five of 10 games, so it’s pretty self-explanatory that it’s nothing about the coach.
“When I look in the players’ eyes, like after the game (Thursday) night, nobody wants to win more than those guys,” Boudreau said. “It’s not like they’re just sitting there, going, ‘Oh, here we go again.’ They’re frustrated with themselves and the results.”
New Players versus Old Players
The Ducks lost Matt Beleskey, Francois Beauchemin, Emerson Etem, and Kyle Palmieri over the summer. The additions of Kevin Bieksa, Chris Stewart, Anton Khudobin, and Shawn Horcoff have not met the expectations of many early on. The addition of Mike Santorelli has helped as he is the surprise goal scoring leader with two goals. Carl Hagelin hasn’t been 100% healthy, but he has scored a goal and an assist.
All-Star Less Ducks
The big three for the Ducks, Ryan Getzlaf, Corey Perry, and Ryan Kesler have all been in a simultaneous drought. The big three have combined for six assists and surprisingly zero goals. Perry has been close several times and appears to be getting close to scoring. Kesler has been getting shots, but just hasn’t been able to get many quality chances.
It was discovered that Getzlaf had appendicitis, which explains a great deal about his inconsistent play to begin the season.
On Injury: “It got to the point where we were worried about it rupturing at some point,” Getzlaf said. “It wasn’t sore on a daily basis, but I had three or four episodes where I was in pretty extreme pain.”
On Recovery: “I don’t imagine it being too long. Today was a lot better day than it was yesterday, so as long as I can keep moving forward right now it shouldn’t be very long.”
Where do the Ducks go from here?
The 2015-16 start to the season tied the 1996-97 season for the worst franchise start in the first 10 games. In 1996-97, the Ducks started 1-7-2 like this year’s current team with only 4 points. The Ducks did finish that season 2nd in the Pacific Division and as the 4th seed in the Western Conference. They made it to the second round of the playoffs also that year.
So it may not be easy, but the Ducks can still make the playoffs.
What can the fans do?
We have to support the team win or lose. The best way to show support is to come to the Honda Center this home stand wearing orange. The fans can sport the new 3rd retro jersey(I got mine today!), the Stadium Series Jersey, or wear anything orange. Imagine the effect it will have on the players if they come out on the ice Sunday to an arena filled with fans wearing orange.
