Today the NHL has named John Gibson the rookie of the month for December. Gibson went 5-3-1 with a 1.62 goals-against average(GAA), .929 save percentage(SV%) and three shutouts in 10 appearances. A break down of his December games is listed below.
For this season, Gibson has a 8-4-2 record with a 1.63 GAA, .932 SV% and four shutouts in 15 total outings. Gibson had a shutout streak of 184 minutes and 30 seconds spanning over his last four games.
According to the Hockey Operation Guidelines, Gibson is still considered a rookie this season. There is a three part definition that determines who is a rookie in the NHL, which is stated as follows:
“To be considered a rookie, a player must not have played in more than 25 NHL games in any preceding seasons, nor in six or more NHL games in each of any two preceding seasons. Any player at least 26 years of age (by September 15th of that season) is not considered a rookie.”
First, the most games Gibson has played in for a preceding regular season was 23 during the 2014-15 NHL season. Second, he also did not play more than six games in any two preceding regular seasons. As just noted, he played 23 games in the 2014-15 season and he only played in 3 games during the 2013-14 season. Lastly, Gibson is not 26 years of age. One additional note, playoff game appearances do not factor into this rule.
Congratulations to John Gibson!
