Today the Anaheim Ducks focused on the special teams, specifically the power play at practice. Per Eric Stephens of the OC Register, Simon Despres took part in the penalty kill. He was paired with Korbinian Holzer and took contact in drills today.

It’s an extremely good sign to see Despres working hard and looking close to getting back on ice for a game. Despres has only played in four total games this season. His last game was all the way back on October 16th, when Colorado’s Tyson Barrie checked him in the head. With Cam Fowler out for a few more weeks, the return of Despres would be a welcomed sight.

The Ducks defense has played well despite missing Fowler and Despres. The team’s defense is ranked third in the league in amount of shots allowed on net per game with 27.4. A major reason for this is their ability to block shots during 5-on-5 play and while being short-handed. The Ducks have been also executing the trap and clogging up the neutral zone effectively. The Ducks’ defense is currently ranked 8th in the league in goals against per game at 2.37.
