Today the Anaheim Ducks hit practice again, but were missing a few players. According to Eric Stephens of the OC Register, Simon Despres was not at practice and believed to be ill. Korbinian Holzer was present at practice as a result. Also new trade acquisitions Jamie McGinn and Brandon Pirri were not present at practice as well. According to Stephens, both players were flying in later today.
The Anaheim Ducks did announce that Pirri will wear number 11 and McGinn will wear 88 like he did in Buffalo. McGinn is only the second play in Anaheim’s history to wear a number in the 80’s. Ilya Bryzgalov wore 80 in his brief time with the Ducks last year.
Shawn Horcoff did return to practice today. It was his first day he was eligible to work out with the team since being suspended for 20 games back on January 26. He is not eligible to play until March 11. As reported by Elliott Teaford of the Los Angeles News Group, Horcoff stated he used a banned substance to help with a hand injury he suffered in November because he was unable to hold his stick completely due to the injury. It appears that Horcoff did not know the substance was banned, but still took responsibility for it by not doing proper research when the incident first became public.
The San Diego Gulls announced that Corey Tropp will wear number 12 and Martin Gernat will wear number 3. Both have been assigned to San Diego.
Here is an idea of what Anaheim’s lineup could look like for tomorrow.
For the offense there could be a few different looks. First, if McGinn is used to replace Patrick Maroon, then he could play with Thompson and Garbutt or Rakell and Perry. Those are the two lines Maroon played on for a majority of the season. Also Santorelli and Garbutt switched places for part of the game against Los Angeles, so that could happen too. Pirri is going be examined by the Ducks medical staff to determine when he can play.
For the defense, Holzer could play if Despres is still feeling ill tomorrow. Clayton Stoner is available even though his hip flexor can flare up from time to time according to Steve Carroll.
First Star of The Month
Ryan Getzlaf was named the NHL first star of the month. He scored 20 points(six goals and 14 assists) and had +13 rating. He is currently on a 11 game point streak. The Ducks went 12-1-1 in the month of February setting a record for most wins and points in one calendar month in franchise history.
Happy Birthday Anaheim Ducks!
On March 1, 1993, the Anaheim franchise was officially named the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim. Anaheim was awarded a franchise in December 1992, but wasn’t named officially until March. Today is the organization’s 23rd Birthday!
