The Anaheim Ducks entered the game riding a nine game winning streak and were able to make it ten in a row in a game that saw plenty of scoring and fighting.
The Ducks got the jump on Arizona scoring two goals on their first two shots. Jamie McGinn would score first, as Niklas Treutle‘s pass would deflect of Corey Perry and sit at the side of the net. McGinn cleaned up the loose change by slamming the puck in the back of the net for the 1-0 lead. Then on the power play, the Coyotes over commit to Perry, who finds Rickard Rakell alone at the side of the net for an easy tap in goal. Ducks lead 2-0 after the first period, shots were tied at nine apiece.
The Ducks started the period on a power play as Oliver Ekman-Larsson was called for hooking late the end of the first period. The Ducks would convert again as Cam Fowler would blast a slap shot through traffic past Treutle. Ducks lead 3-0. Arizona would answer back as Anthony Duclair would score on a power play chance to cut the lead to 3-1. The Ducks would respond shortly after as Josh Manson would squeeze a shot past Treutle to make it 4-1. Later on the power play a rebound would come to Perry and he would put it back in the net to make it 5-1. Things got chippy after the goal and it would carry over to the third period.
In the final frame there was no scoring, but there were plenty of hard hits and fights. Michael Stone slashed Mike Santorelli in the first minute of the period, but the Ducks didn’t convert on the power play. Then later Stone and Nick Ritchie would get tangled up and earn matching minors for roughing. Towards the end of the period Connor Murphy would check Cam Fowler hard along the boards. Nick Ritchie grabbed Murphy, but Jarred Tinordi intervened and the two dropped the gloves.
Things would get even nastier as Ryan Garbutt would make a hard check on Ekman-Larsson causing both Max Domi and Duclair to go after Garbutt. Domi grabbed Garbutt from behind and started throwing punches taking Garbutt down. You can watch melee below. In the end the Ducks finally prevailed 5-1.
Key Moment of the Game
Manson’s goal making it 4-1. Arizona had scored earlier in the second to make it a 3-1 score, but Manson’s goal put the game out of reach.
The Ducks went without their captain Ryan Getzlaf, who was announced to have a lower body aliment. He took a hard hit to the side of his leg in the game against Montreal, which is likely the area that could be sore. Even without their captain, the Ducks took advantage of rookie goalie Truetle scoring twice on their first two shots. In the second period, the Ducks continued scoring and the power play continues to roll. The final frame turned into fight club as Arizona’s frustrations started to boil over. Two fights broke out in the period. Ritchie did well in his first NHL fight and Garbutt didn’t really have a chance to fight being jumped from behind by Domi. In the end the Ducks prevailed on the score board and physically as they head into another epic battle with the Kings on Saturday.
