Today the Anaheim Ducks traveled to St. Louis and hit the ice again for practice. The Ducks lost last night to the Colorado Avalanche, but more importantly a few players were banged up in the contest and didn’t practice today.
Sami Vatanen was hit with an elbow by John Mitchell in the first period last night and did not return to the game. He and Nate Thompson were not on the ice today per Eric Stephens of the OC Register. Bruce Boudreau thinks Thompson will be fine for tomorrow’s game. Vatanen is considered day-to-day with an upper body injury.
Here is the video of the hit on Vatanen.
Simon Despres took a cross-check to the neck area in the third period last night, but he was at practice today. He told Stephens that he just had a bruise on his neck. Colorado’s Gabriel Landeskog was not penalized on the play, but the NHL suspended him from three games today. Broudreau had this to say to Stephens about the suspension, “I thought the league looked at it and did the appropriate action. I looked at it last night. It was definitely a shot to the head.”
Here is the SportsNet video of the hit involving Despres.
No players have been called up from San Diego at the moment. If Vatanen is not able to go in Friday’s game, then it’s likely Clayton Stoner would play. There is still the option of Korbinian Holzer, who hasn’t played with Anaheim since January 23, 2016. He was sent to San Diego on a brief conditioning stint where he played in a few games before returning to Anaheim.
