Korbinian Holzer has signed a one-year one-way contract with the Anaheim Ducks per Renaud Lavoie of TVA Sports. The contract is worth $700,000.

Holzer played in 29 regular season games last year with the Ducks. He had a total of three points, all assists, and a +/- of -3. He also appeared in nine games with the San Diego Gulls, recording three assists with a +/- of +2.

Analysis

The Ducks have an extremely crowded blue line. They currently have Kevin Bieksa, Simon Despres, Cam Fowler, Josh Manson, Clayton Stoner, and Sami Vatanen all signed. Anaheim still also needs to re-sign Hampus Lindholm. Holzer came in and played mainly when other defensemen were hurt. He isn’t an offensive threat by any means, but he plays solid defense while minimizing mistakes with the puck.

If Anaheim is able to keep Lindholm, then signing Holzer gives the Ducks at least eight options on the blue line. This is not counting Shea Theodore and Brandon Montour, who both could see time in Anaheim next year. The Ducks also recently signed Nate Guenin and Jeff Schultz, who both will likely play significant time in San Diego.

The Ducks have holes in their offensive lineup and Bob Murray is still looking for a left-shooting left-wing. The signing of Holzer further supports the notion of trading at least one defenseman for a forward. One possible trade partner could be the Detroit Red Wings, who have shown interest in Fowler. However, recently Detroit has shown signs they may wait on making a move for another month or so. Another option could be Toronto’s James van Riemsdyk, whose name has been mentioned going all the way back to the trade deadline of last season.

According to Generalfanager.com, the Ducks have approximately $9.7 million in cap space, which will mostly be consumed if Lindholm and Rickard Rakell re-sign. If the Ducks want to get a top six scoring left-winger, then trading from the blue line will give them the best opportunity to do so.
