Teemu Selanne will suit up for the Winnipeg Jets in their alumni game against the Edmonton Oilers. The game will be one day prior to the 2016 Tim Hortons NHL Heritage Classic at Investors Group Field in Winnipeg on Oct. 23. It will be Selanne’s first game since retiring after the 2013-14 NHL season.
The uniforms that will be worn at the Heritage Classic were inspired by each team’s tenure in the WHA prior to entering the NHL. The Winnipeg Jets will be wearing the uniform worn in the final WHL game against the Edmonton Oilers on May 20, 1979. The Oilers will be wearing the orange jersey from their early years in Edmonton. The jersey also happens to be their current third jersey.
Other star players include Wayne Gretzky, Jari Kurri and Mark Messier who will participate in the event. Ron Wilson, Anaheim’s first head coach in franchise history, will also participate in the alumni game playing for the Jets. Dwayne Roloson, Anaheim’s former goalie coach, will play for the Oilers.
Grant Fuhr will be at the event, but won’t play in the game. According to Gretzky, “[Fuhr] can’t play anymore, his knees are too bad, but he’ll be there. We wouldn’t go if he wasn’t there.” Fuhr won the Stanley Cup five times with the Oilers.
Jets Alumni Roster:
Goalie: Bob Essensa
Coaches: Tom McVie and Serge Savard
Oilers Alumni Roster:
More players may be added prior to Oct. 22 when the game is played.
