Tonight the Anaheim Ducks(4-5-2) host the Arizona Coyotes(4-6-0). The Ducks were 2-2-1 in the season series last year. The game starts tonight at 7 PM PT.

Anaheim Outlook

Anaheim is coming off a 5-1 loss to Pittsburgh. The Ducks were without the services of Ryan Getzlaf and Nick Ritchie. The Ducks got down early 2-0 in the first period but responded when Cam Fowler scored to make it 2-1 before the first period ended. That was as close as the Ducks would get, however, as the Penguins played dominant the rest of the way adding three more scores en route to the 5-1 win.

The Ducks made several roster moves yesterday. Mason Raymond was placed on unconditional waivers and his contract was terminated. Jacob Larsson returned to Sweden to play with Frolunda. Lastly, Shea Theodore was reassigned again to San Diego. Yesterday, Randy Carlyle said both Nick Ritchie and Ryan Getzlaf would practice today. It’s not clear if either will play tonight. An updated lineup will be provided closer to game time.

In order for the Ducks to win tonight, they need to find some consistency with their play, especially in the second period. The have been dominant in the middle frame when they played Nashville and Los Angeles. And at other times, the Ducks can’t get anything going in the second period as was the case against Pittsburgh. Anaheim is a little banged with injured players, but this is an opportunity for young players being called up to shine. It’s early in the season, but it appears like it’s going to be another interesting year in Anaheim.

Arizona Outlook

The Arizona Coyotes find themselves in last place in the Pacific Division looking up at looking up at everyone else. It’s still early in the season as they are only two points behind the Ducks. They are coming off a shootout win 3-2 against Nashville. The Coyotes came from behind to tie the game in the third period to force overtime and then pulled out two points in the shootout.

The Coyotes played the Ducks hard last season. Anthony Duclair and Max Domi seem to bring their best game against Anaheim. In the five contests last season, Duclair scored six goals in four of those contests, with a hat trick in the first game in October of 2015. Domi tallied three goals and three assists against Anaheim in those games. The key for the Coyotes tonight will be to score first and to try to build a lead early. They played last night and in an extended game, so they can’t afford to get down in this contest or it could be a long night. Arizona is ranked 24th in penalty kill at 76.3%, so they also need to stay out of the sin bin if they want to earn two points tonight.
