The Anaheim Ducks announced today they made a trade for Colorado Avalanche center Ben Meyers in exchange for a 2024 fifth-round draft pick.

Meyers is 5-11, 194 pounds and he has been with Colorado the past three seasons. He had six goals in 53 games with the Avs since the 2021-22 season. This season he played in nine games in Colorado and scored one goal. He spent a majority of the season with the Colorado Eagles in the AHL playing in 32 games and recording 25 total points(11 G + 14 A). He also played 30 games with the Eagles in the 2022-23 season when Greg Cronin was the head coach.

Meyers does like to go into the corners and engage in puck battles. He brings a solid transition game and he can create turnovers. He is good on the penalty kill. He has a quick wrist shot and likes to score in and around the opponent’s net. He is inconsistent offensively and is still a work in progress, but he has the tools to provide secondary scoring.

Analysis:

With the departure of Adam Henrique and Sam Carrick earlier this week, the Ducks needed some center depth. Meyers will come in and help fill the bottom six role that Carrick had for the Ducks. There is some familiarity with his style of play since Cronin coached him last season.

Meyers requires 21 more NHL games to retain his Restricted Free Agent(RFA) status at the end of the season per Cap Friendly. The Ducks only have 20 games left so Myers will be a Group 6 Unrestricted Free Agent(UFA). Anaheim should sign him soon to an extension and if he doesn’t work out then they can trade him. Overall, not a bad pickup for a fifth-round draft pick.
